Oscar Araripe nasceu na Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, em julho de 1941. A mãe
cearense e o pai gaúcho logo foram morar no bairro proletário do Encantado,
onde o pai, médico, e a mãe, professora, exerciam suas profissões.
Desta época o autor lembra os ecos rudes da guerra - a difteria, o carro a
gasogênio, o começo da miséria que há muito se abatia sobre os povos do
mundo. Rebelde, sonhador, tem péssimo desempenho escolar, sobrevindo-lhe
doença quase fatal. Depois, mais saudável, descobre as alegrias de uma
meninice solta e suburbana, ao lado de belas fruteiras e morros e campos de
futebol. Ali, naqueles quintais, aprende os ventos pelas pipas, o gosto da
fortuna aliado à audácia, a sociabilidade independente, a grande beleza do
pequeno. E do grande. O universo na bola de gude. Lê Júlio Verne, o Robin
Hood, o Robinson Crusoé, os Três Mosqueteiros, os heróis dos quadrinhos
americanos. “Os mais belos quadros eu vi nos “quadrinhos”. “Muitos de meus
gestos aprendi e exercitei fazendo e soltando pipa” - iria mais tarde
declarar.
Depois, subitamente, os pais mudam-se para Ipanema e Oscar Araripe pula das
pedras do Arpoador, freqüenta a Praia do Diabo e toma chope no Jangadeiros.
É a Ipanema de antes da Garota: os anos 60,e a política toma conta de tudo,
parecendo poder salvar a própria vida. O autor entra para a Faculdade
Nacional de Direito. Sobrevém o golpe de 64.
Faz parte do CACO-Livre. É cassado. Viaja aos Estados Unidos, como bolsista
da Interamerican University Foundation, em 66 e 68. Freqüenta seminários, a
Harvard Square e o convulsionado Campus da Universidade de Harvard. A
América mesma está convulsionada: a guerra do Vietnã e a luta pelos direitos
civis. Araripe interessa-se pelo teatro. Escreve ensaio sobre o teatro
Americano contemporâneo. Ganha viagem à França. Volta ao Brasil. Traduz
Peter Brooks, "O teatro e seu Espaço", para a Vozes. Adapta e encena, em
Ouro Preto, com Maria Fernanda e Othon Bastos, O Romanceiro da
Inconfidência, de Cecília Meireles. Escreve "O Enviado da Transilvânia",
sátira para teatro em três atos. É punido pela Censura Federal em episódio
que origina a Greve do Teatro. Interessa-se pela pessoa humana. Milita na AP
e escreve o ensaio "Breve Estudo Introdutório aos Personalismos", que lhe
vale bolsa de estudos na Universidade Pró Deo, de Roma.
Aí escreve para publicações brasileiras. Viaja pela Europa. Organiza, com
outros, passeata em Roma contra o AI 5. Volta ao Brasil, 1969. É
críticoteatral, editorialista cultural, colunista, redator e repórter do
Correio da Manhã, Última Hora e Jornal do Brasil. Edita, com Augusto
Rodrigues, o jomal Arte e Educação. É membro fundador da Sociedade
Internacional de Educação Através da Arte (INSEA). Viaja a convite à
Polônia, à Alemanha, à China. Publica "China: O Pragmatismo Possível" pela
Artenova, alcançando grande sucesso. 1975 - É citado na Bibliografia do Novo
Dicionário Aurélio. Deixa o jornalismo. Faz literatura. Participa de
Poemação, com Roberto Moricone, no Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro.
Publica "Maria na terra de meus olhos", pela Rocco, com prefácio de Antônio
Houaiss e Eduardo Portella. É verbete na Enciclopédia da Literatura
Brasileira, de Afrânio Coutinho.
1976 - Oscar Araripe passa a morar por 13 anos em Mirantão, MG.
1982 - Publica "Marta, Júpiter e Eu" pela Marco Zero, com prefácio de Márcio
Souza. Dele diz Marcelo Rubens Paiva, em Veja, em agosto de 1983:"Uma carta
de amor à natureza e, sobretudo, às mulheres".
1984 - Escreve "Eu Promeu", alentada prosa, finalmente com 400 páginas, e
com a qual encerra sua trilogia literária. Como calígrafo e desenhista faz
12 "transcrições visionadas" de inscrições rupestres do Brasil, a que chama
Pilares. Conclui o pilar Oui Xiang-Xing Oui.
1988 - Expõe na Galeria Olívia Kann, em Ipanema, paisagens e O Pilar do
Areião.
"Coloquei sobre a mesa aqueles duzentos e tantos desenhos, feitos com uma
incrível mistura de materiais - acrílico, pastel, tinta industrial, bico de
pena, markers - sobre um inusitado papel vegetal. Fui passando um a um como
páginas de um livro. Esta aproximação que faço com o texto não é absurda,
afinal Oscar Araripe, autor e animador teatral, personagem de 64 e 68, autor
de um livro de sucesso sobre a China e desde 1975 romancista, desenha e
pinta um pouco como escreve, esplendidamente e de um jorro só. E, devo
confessar, foi uma viagem delirante como se, careta como sou, tivesse feito
minha primeira viagem" - diz Frederico Moraes.

as much for its original, alive, glad, spontaneous and unusual trace and
colors, as for the use of an unusual nautical cloth as painting support -
and for the use of tubular structures as frame, wich allow him to exhibit
continuousily outdoors and directly to the public at large.
Opening new spaces for the painting, Araripe shows in 19991, in Brasilia,
Brazil, in the Villa-Lobos Room of the National Theater and in 92, in
Arpoador, in Rio de Janeiro, the Pillar of the Uaupés, an original cultural
tribute.
Its panels on Tiradentes, shown in April of 1992, simultaneously in the
gardens of the Museum of the Republic, in Rio de Janeiro, and in the patio
of the Museum of the Inconfidência, in Ouro Preto, during the Tiradentes
Bicentennial Festival, later had been showed in the Mineiro Museum, in Belo
Horizonte. Still in 19 92, he shows Kites, in the Cultural Center Bank of
Brazil, in Rio, and in June, in the Botanical Garden, Extinction Never More,
in Eco-92 UN Conference, and seen by a public esteem in 2 million people. In
July of 93, opening the Festival of Winter of Ouro Preto, he shows Kites of
Freedom, in Opuro PretoTiradentes Large Square and, in december, Natividade,
in the Oscar Niemeyer little chapel of Brasilia. Still in 93 he paints Ouro
Preto, showing 16 canvases in the Foundation of Art of Ouro Preto and in the
Villa Rizzo, in Rio.
"Nobody painted Ouro Preto so prettier, so radiating - and looks at that it
is not easy to find the brightness under the weight of History" - says
Gustavo Square in Capinando the River.
His landscapes, flora, animals and erotics, and also his visionary
transcriptions of the Brazilian archaic art was analised by consecrated
names of the critical world, the journalism and the culture, such as
Frederico Moraes, Jean Boghici, Alberto Beuttênmuller, Walmir Ayala,
Augustus Marzagão, Luis Galdino, Milton Ribeiro, Marcio Cotrim, Fernando We
read, Mario Margutti, Tertuliano of the Steps, Marylka Mendes, João Bosco de
Castro Teixeira, Rubens Araújo, Helium Sheep, Gustavo Square, Jose Geraldo
Heleno, Wilson Rasp, Oyama Alencar, Palhares Jr, Cherlânyo Barros de Castro,
Manuel Garcia Noriega and Vicente Botin.

In March of 1994 he opens a personal gallery in Tiradentes – Minas Gerais,
where he lives until now.
In April, during 7º anniversary of the Funrei, he exhibitTiradentes, the
animous lieutenant, in São João del Rei. In July, opening the 7º Cultural
Winter, showing Kites of São João, in some points of the city. In March of
1995 it carries through interactive painting with the children of
Tiradentes, during the Cultural Week of the UFMG, showing the collective
artwork Day and the Night, outdoors, in the Plaza of Forras. In July he
inaugurates Tiradentes, the animous town, in the old Forum of the adorable
little great city. In December of the same year he paints São João Del-Rei,
exhibiting 14 canvases in the Regional Museum. In 99 he turns themselves
toward the sea and he paints the Comprida Island, in the São Paulo coast,
invited by the painter and cultural entertainer Odail Gomes -, and San
Simeon, in the Central Coast of California, USA, inviting by the Niels Udsen
couple. In 2000 he shows The Dance of Tamanduá-Bandeira, wons the World Art
Award of Excellence, of the ArtSpace2000, and was invited to the World Art
on Paper 2000 Festival, in Kranj, Eslovênia; and was agraciated by the 100
Top Art Sites and gains several international art prizes. In July and August
of 2001 it shows in the Porto Seguro Museum, Bahia, Seascapes and Landscapes
of Trancoso. In November was invited by the TriAmericas.com to exhibit Horse
of America in Lincoln Center, in New York and Entities of America, in the
Paul Robeson University, in New Jersey, USA. In 2002 he opens new personal
gallery in the Historical City, in Porto Seguro, Bahia,- and the video Oscar
Araripe, of Cesar Tolentino and Marinho Antunes, wons the V Movie Festival
of Tiradentes. In 2003 was inveted to the IV Biennial of Firenze, Italy and
carries through expositions in Toulouse, France and Madrid, Spain. In 2004,
Araripe portraied landscapes of Ceará and the heroine Barbara de Alencar,
his six grandmother. It also makes a definitive sketch of the portrait of
Tristão Araripe, his fithy grandfather, the mártir and president of the
Republic of the Confederation of the Equator. Still in 2004 he exhibit
Flowers to the living in Rosa Girardi Gallery, Juiz De Fora, Minas Gerais
and carries through the Ceará expositions, in the Cultural Center
Oboé-Iracema, in Fortaleza City, and in the University of the Cariri, in
Crato city.Realizes also exhibitions in 7 cities of Spain, including Madrid
and Barcelona. In November of the same year it shows Bárbara and Iracema,
two women of the Ceará, in Ceará Association of the Press. In March of 2005
ishows An American Springtime, in the Solange Rabello Art Gallery, Miami. In
July he goes to the Festival of the Caribbean, in Santiago of Cuba, Cuba,
where shows Caribbean Repetroglifos in the Céspedes Park. In 2006
exhibitTiradentes Revisited in the Solar of the Ramalhos, in Tiradentes
colonial town, almost in front of his studio.
